About Fiscale - R&D Tax Credit Advisors
Our aim is to ensure that our clients are claiming valuable tax reliefs and in particular Research and Development (R&D) Tax Credits.
The directors believe passionately that there are still many companies who are both innovative and leading edge in their own particular field, but believe, because they are not labelled 'high tech', that they are not entitled to claim R&D Tax Credits. In many of these cases, this is not the case and these companies are missing out on valuable tax relief which could significantly increase their funding and support innovation and jobs.
The philosophy of the company is to:
Provide responsible advice. If there is no possibility of claiming the relief will tell you; we will not enter a claim unless we firmly believe that there is a valid and qualifying case.
Operate under the ethical code of the Chartered Institute of Taxation.
Build up a long term relationship with our clients and assist them in not only claiming the relief, but also setting up the systems required to ensure that they comply with their statutory duty and to reduce the costs of claiming the relief.
Not operate as a general tax practice, but to work, in his highly specialised area, alongside the incumbent advisors to provide the client with the best possible advice. We have already established some very good relationships with a number of advisors ranging in size from sole practitioners to large regional practices.
Employ professional tax advisors and experienced business people. The former have a vast amount of experience in the technical aspects of claiming R&D tax credits and the latter have an in-depth knowledge and wide experience in running businesses which have claimed R&D Tax Credits.

Stephen Bunting - R&D Tax Credit Specialist
Stephen started his career with HMRC after leaving university. In 1997, he moved to professional practice where he studied for his accountancy qualifications with two well-known accountancy practices in Cambridge.
After qualifying in 2000 he joined Grant Thornton, working initially in Ipswich and Bury St Edmunds before transferring to Head Office in London. In 2008, Stephen returned to Cambridge as a Director to help develop the Tax Practice for Peters Elworthy and Moore.
During his career Stephen has worked with businesses and companies of all types and sizes; These range from local sole traders to internationally quoted companies, and in many different sectors - from traditional manufacturing to start-ups and high tech businesses. Stephen has built an enviable reputation for his technical knowledge in providing leading edge 'outside of the box' advice.
Stephen's specialist area is helping businesses to claim Research and Development Tax Credits. This experience has been amassed during his 20 years in practice. Stephen has made successful R&D Tax Credit claims for clients in a wide range of industries including; software, computer gaming, motor, environmental, clothing, food processing, communications, web based applications, seeds, goldfish bowls and last, but not least... tree growing.
One of Stephen's strengths is his ability to successfully negotiate claims where other accountants have previously advised that a claim would not be successful - Stephen has never had a claim refused.
Stephen's appointment as Technical Director for Fiscale marks his return to professional practice, following 18 months recovering from a serious car accident.

John Mayhew - Executive Chairman
In 1993, John Mayhew founded HET Software to develop software solutions for the social care sector in the UK and later, Australia, providing technical support from Malaysia. The company became a 'best of breed' with over 600 clients and a reputation for product innovation.
He sold the company in August 2012, remaining one of four Executive Directors. The combined business had revenues of £10 million per annum, and continued to operate in the UK, Australia and Malaysia employing 100 staff.
By the time of his retirement in early 2014 John had built up three pro-bono directorships, later reducing these to two.
John is a Director of the Haverhill Chamber of Commerce and is currently heavily involved in a campaign to improve the A1307 road link towards Cambridge.
He is also a Director of ONE Haverhill, originally a Government backed pilot, but now fully fledged and providing a forum for major stakeholders in the area (Town Council, Borough Council, County Council, Police, NHS, Education, Housing, voluntary sector and Business) to collaborate on community projects. He sat for 15 months on the small working party charged with managing the Statutory Master Plan process for the regeneration of Haverhill Town Centre, which was approved by St Edmundsbury Borough Council in September 2015. He remains involved in the management of the Master Plan delivery process.
On retirement, John wanted to create a balance between his pro-bono and commercial interests and in 2014, used his experience of gaining and maintaining Research & Development Tax Credits for his own business to back the creation of Fiscale as specialist tax advisors. Together with his business partner, Stephen Bunting, he has built the business up to 10 employees and has helped clients to recover over £3 million of Corporation Tax.

Kate - R&D Tax Manager
Kate studied Chemistry at Reading University obtaining a 2:1 BSc degree in 1999. Subsequently she obtained a job as an Actuarial Assistant at Canada Life. However, shortly after she realised that this was not the career for her and embarked upon a career in Accountancy.
Kate joined Haslers accountancy firm in 2001 and quickly passed her Association of Taxation Technicians exams with distinction in November 2002. In 2004, she sat and passed her Chartered Tax Advisor exams and became a qualified Chartered Tax advisor. Kate progressed to becoming a Mixed Tax Manager with her own client portfolio which encompassed both compliance and non-compliance matters. Dealing with personal and corporate tax returns, R & D Claims and advice on purchase of own shares are just a few examples of the type of work that Kate has dealt with.
In September 2013 Kate moved to a smaller firm in Hertford heading up their tax department. During this time she also gained experience in the preparation of accounts for Limited companies and VAT matters. Wanting to take advantage of her Chemistry background and tax skills, she joined Fiscale in March 2015 as our R&D Tax Manager.
During her career Kate has dealt with firms of varying size and business activities ranging from small start-up firms to larger audit clients.
Madeline - Claims Manager
Madeline is our Claims Manager.
Madeline started her career after graduating from Lycée Alexis Montel, in France. Since then, she has spent time working as administration support in Europe's most prestigious cardio-thoracic hospital. She joined Fiscale's technical team in August 2014, she is currently furthering her education by completing a degree in Business and Administration and her professional qualifications in tax.
Madeline supervises the preparation of all of the reports and claims by Fiscale.
Joseph - Claims Administrator
Joseph attended Joyce Frankland Academy, formerly Newport Free Grammar School, and completed GCSE A Levels in Mixed Science, Business, History and Physical Education in July 2015.
Joseph undertook work experience in the loans department at Lloyds Bank and at Sony Music where he assisted with administration and marketing.
Joseph joined Fiscale in January 2016 as he wanted to work in the field of accountancy and was particularly interested in Tax accountancy.
Joseph is currently furthering his education by completing a Level 4 Association of Taxation Technicians (ATT) qualification. His long term ambition is to become a Chartered Tax Accountant.
Pieres - Claims Administrator
After moving to Haverhill in 2010, Pieres completed his A-Levels at Castle Manor Academy before studying Music Production at University Campus, Suffolk.
Whilst studying, Pieres realised that his interests and long-term goals lay in the world of business. When a position as an Administration Apprentice for ONE Haverhill (contracted to the Haverhill Town Council) arose, Pieres seized the opportunity to pursue his ambitions.
Pieres was responsible for carrying out administrative duties for ONE Haverhill and the Haverhill Town Council. While fulfilling his role, Pieres completed a Business Administration Level 3 qualification which included elements such as Principles of Leadership and Management, Manage an Office Facility and Producing Business Documents. It was during this period that Pieres developed a passion for working with numbers and figures and flourished working within an office environment.
Upon completion of his Apprenticeship in 2016, Pieres immediately joined Fiscale as an Apprentice Claims Administrator and now works alongside colleagues to prepare reports for Fiscale's clients. Pieres is working towards a Level 4 Association of Taxation Technicians (ATT) qualification with the goal of becoming a qualified Tax Advisor.
Bethany - Claims Administrator
Bethany joined Fiscale in September 2016 as a Claims Administrator.
She studied at Castle Manor Academy and then undertook a Level 2 Apprenticeship with a local company where she began to study for an NVQ Level 2 in Business and Administration at Cambridge Regional College.
Bethany is currently completing this qualification. In the future Bethany would like to study for her ATT and CTA exams and become a Chartered Tax advisor.
Neil - Manager, Systems & ClientSide
Neil brings over 30 years of experience to Fiscale, working within leading edge Research and Development environments. During this time he has held various roles which cover the whole of the product life cycle, from Systems Design through to Technical Customer Support and Problem Management.
His early career spans GEC Marconi, Netcom Ltd and General Datacomm Advanced Research Centre. Neil has held positions in Product Design, Validation, Quality Assurance and New Product Introduction.
In 1999 he was based at Fujitsu’s Cambridge development centre, working on the design proving and delivery of Fujitsu's Broadband Access platform for BT’s first generation Broadband network offering. In 2003 he joined BT at their R&D centre at Adastral Park, Ipswich, as Conformance Test Project Lead for next generation broadband systems.
Neil brings experience and skills to the Fiscale team which are invaluable for the introduction of new processes and systems. His “hands on” technical skills enable him to manage the new ClientSide software project.
Katie - New Business Support and Digital Marketing
Katie joined Fiscale in March 2017. Her role is to support the New Business team, to take responsibility for the client engagement administration process and to assist with the company's digital marketing.
Katie attended Linton Village College before joining Cambridge Regional College to study for a City and Guilds Level 2 in Theatrical Hair and Makeup. With a natural flair for the creative Katie decided to change her focus to the world of business and to apply her skills to marketing. When the opportunity arose to join Fiscale Katie saw it as the first step towards forging a career in sales and marketing and is looking forward to developing her current role within the growing company.
Lucie - HR Manager
Lucie joined specialist R&D Tax Credit advisors, Fiscale, in July 2015 to manage the HR function for the company, playing a generalist role supporting the Directors and Chairman in achieving the company's ambitious business strategy and objectives.
Lucie's specialisms include recruitment, having spent eight years with Michael Page recruiting finance professionals and was seconded to Morgan Stanley to run their Temporary Staffing Desk. More recently she was a Recruitment Account Manager For GlaxoSmithKline playing an integral part of the HR team's 'Attract and Retain Talent' programme. As the Recruitment Manager she managed the end-to-end process for hiring candidates into vacancies up to and including VP level.
Lucie also spent 5 years with HET Software, the leading provider of social care management software in the UK and Australia as HR Manager. During this time she achieved her Level 7 CIPD qualification.
Jacqui Stoneman - Regional Director
Jacqui joined specialist R&D Tax Credit advisors, Fiscale, in May 2015 as Regional Director for the West Midlands and Cheshire.
Jacqui is responsible for the development of the Fiscale operation in the West Midlands and Cheshire. Jacqui will become the face of Fiscale promoting the benefits of the R & D Tax Credit scheme in one of the most important industrial regions of the UK.
Jacqui said "I have worked on successful claims in the Eastern Region involving businesses who initially did not think they had a valid claim. Within a few weeks we proved them wrong; our clients have received an average of over £40,000 each; a substantial sum to most SMEs."
Jacqui started her career in recruitment as a 17 year old office junior progressing through the company to become Managing Director in 1992. The recruitment company was rebranded in 2007 as The Just Recruitment Group and employed 60 staff across 5 branches with a turnover in excess of £10 million.
In 2003 Jacqui bought a failing children's nursery school, recruited a whole new team of staff and turned the business around in just 9 weeks. Anglia Sunshine Nurseries achieved an Outstanding Ofsted in 2011 and 2014. Jacqui works on the business one day a month and the nursery is a testament to her business beliefs.
Jacqui set up First Team Business Partners in 2012. The management consultancy provides specialist support services to ambitious business leaders who want to achieve more in their business and improve their bottom line quickly.
With 30 years of business experience gained in a diverse range of industry sector Jacqui has a knack for understanding what makes a business tick and knows first-hand how to identify opportunities and build a successful company.

Sasha Talbot - Director
Sasha joined Fiscale in September 2016 as a Director and is responsible for the development of the Northern and the West Midland regions.
Sasha's career began with Grant Thornton in 1996 and she qualified as a Chartered Certified Accountant in 2003. During her time at Grant Thornton she worked in the Rescue and Reorganisation department, producing company forecasts, business reviews, together with carrying out corporate insolvencies.
Sasha then went on to work in the tax department where she gained experience in dealing with Owner Managed SMEs to large groups of companies.
She then joined the Corporate Tax team at Ensors, Ipswich in 2004 and qualified as a Chartered Tax Advisor in 2005. During her time at Ensors she dealt with self-employed consultants, to subsidiaries of large multi-national corporations. She also became a specialist in Research and Development Tax Credits. This involved providing advice to clients in respect of their claims, together with preparing and submitting claims to HMRC. She also offered a number of presentations and seminars at marketing events, advising on R&D Tax Credits.
After taking some time out and leaving Ensors in December 2012 to raise a family, Sasha is very excited to be specialising in R&D Tax Credits once again. Sasha enjoys being able to assist clients in getting tax credits back, as invariably accountants and tax advisors cost money and are not seen favourably by clients.

Hannah Tilson - Technical Director
Hannah joined Fiscale on 1st November 2017 as Technical Director with responsibility for the development of the South East region.
Hannah started her career in the specialised area of Research and Development (R&D) Tax Credits in 2003 when she was appointed as a Corporate Tax Manager at BDO. Hannah moved to Grant Thornton in 2007 to take up the position of Corporate Tax Associate Director.
During nearly 8 years at Grant Thornton Hannah was responsible for the corporate tax affairs of a wide range of clients. Hannah's remit included the specialist area of R&D Tax Credits and she successfully handled claims for SMEs, large companies, PLCs and multinationals in a variety of different industries including software, manufacturing, education and fish farming.
Hannah started her own company, HT Accounting, in 2015 to provide accountancy and tax compliance services. Running her own business allowed Hannah the flexibility to continue working in a field she loved while raising her young family. Now her children are in school Hannah is excited to be championing R&D Tax Credits to SMEs in the South East.
Hannah enjoys working in the field of R&D Tax Credits. This specialist area of tax provides the opportunity to fully utilise her technical expertise and business acumen - from the assessment of initial eligibility to the presentation of the final claim. As a people person Hannah also enjoys the client-facing aspect of her role.
